Notes on the Heat Pump Net Zero Investment Roadmap

21st Apr 2023

The UK government has published a roadmap outlining its plans to increase the use of heat pumps in the UK. Heat pumps are a low-carbon heating technology that can be used to heat homes and businesses. They work by transferring heat from the outside air or ground to the inside of a building. This makes them a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional heating systems such as gas boilers.

The government's roadmap sets a target of installing 600,000 heat pumps per year by 2028. This would represent a significant increase from the current level of installation, which is around 55,000 per year. To achieve this target, the government is investing £28 billion in the heat pump industry. This investment will be used to support the development of new heat pump technologies, to increase the manufacturing capacity of heat pumps in the UK, and to provide financial incentives to encourage people to install heat pumps.

The government is also working to address the concerns about the high cost of heat pumps. The average cost of a heat pump is currently around £10,000. However, the government is working to reduce the cost of heat pumps by providing financial incentives and by working with manufacturers to improve the efficiency of heat pumps.

The Heat Pump Net Zero Investment Roadmap is a positive step towards decarbonising the UK's heating sector. However, it remains to be seen whether the government's targets will be met. The success of the roadmap will depend on a number of factors, including the cost of heat pumps, the availability of financial incentives, and the public's willingness to switch to heat pumps.
