The Great British Insulation Scheme

12th Apr 2023

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) (Previously called ECO+) is a £1 billion government scheme that plans to help the worst-performing households in the country with their energy efficiency, by aiding in the installation of insulation. The scheme is open to homes in England, Scotland, and Wales that have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D or below. This scheme has been proposed to run from Spring 2023 to March 2026.

There are two main types of insulation that can be installed under the GBIS:

  • Wall insulation: Cavity wall insulation is installed between the studs in your walls. It can help to reduce heat loss through your walls and make your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Internal/external solid wall insulation is applied internally or externally against a solid brick wall to add an additional layer of insulation to the property again, keeping the house cooler in summer and warmer in winter

  • Roof insulation: This type of insulation is installed in the roof of your home. It can help to reduce heat loss through your roof and make your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. There are various criteria for different roof types

The GBIS could help save money on your energy bills and make your home more comfortable. It may also help to reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to the UK's net zero emissions target.

Eligibility for the GBIS has outlined eligibility groups including a general eligibility group for lower Council Tax bands and a low-income eligibility group. It's estimated that this scheme will help around 300,000 households across the UK with the potential to save around £300 on their bills.

Once the scheme launches, households will be able to use the gov.uk website eligibility checker or contact a participating supplier to check their eligibility. If a household is eligible to participate in this scheme, they will be contacted to book a survey to assess their home and/or arrange installation.

The GBIS is a great scheme that intends to improve the energy efficiency of your home and save money on your energy bills. If you are eligible for the scheme, we encourage you to take advantage of it.

Here are some possible additional benefits of the GBIS, following the installation of insulation:

  • Improved health and wellbeing: Warmer homes can help to improve health and wellbeing by reducing the risk of colds and flu

  • Increased property value: Insulation can increase the value of your home by making it more energy efficient

  • Reduced carbon emissions: Insulation can help to reduce carbon emissions by making homes more energy efficient
